If you are reading this, either you know exactly what you are looking for and you go out of your way to get it OR you just don't care much what mouse pad you use. Most people don't care. Some don't even use one, and they are perfectly OK with it. But I'm rather picky about what mouse pad I use, which might not necessarily be a good thing, but that's how I am.
I'm not a big fan of fabric mouse pads; they get dirty and sticky quite easily, and it's not easy to clean them if they gather the grimes from my hand. Aluminum mouse pads are fine, but for whatever reasons, they tend to be loud when I move my mouse across; your mouse might be silent, or you might not even care. I typically find hard surface mouse pads somewhat slicker for my taste.
XTrac Micro suits me well. The size is perfect, the surface hardness is just right, and it's easy to clean as well. The surface is hard plastic, yet it's flexible enough. I have an older version of this, which is thinner than the new one, but the old one lacked rubber padding, so it moved all over the desk unless I put adhesive tape on it. I'd say "3M Precise Mouse Pad" is quite similar to Micro, but I like Micro's color and design better.
The mouse pad was shipped in a padded envelope with a thick cardboard, so nothing was damaged. I have one for work and another for home, and if I have more computers, I'd put this mouse pad whichever place I happen to be.

This is my second micro purchase (I've purchased 3 of the other models) this one was for my sister and she loved it!
Xtrac pads are the best and I'm always happy with my purchases)

I love this pad, but it doesn't work with my Razer DeathAdder mouse. Even with calibration through Razer's utility, the pointer jumps all around when used on this pad. If your mouse works with this pad then it is really an excellent pad. I like the smaller size, low profile, and high-quality.
